The 15th of August is a day of profound significance for us in India, and especially for our faith. On this day, faith, patriotism and gratitude come together in a unique celebration. As the Church rejoices in the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, our nation celebrates its Independence Day. We honour Our Lady as the Patroness of India, seeking her loving intercession for our country. Adding to the joy is Goa’s cherished Konsachem Fest, the Festival of the New Harvest.
The Assumption reminds us that at the end of her earthly life, Mother Mary was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory. Her life was one of complete trust in God’s will, from her humble “Yes” at the Annunciation to her steadfast presence at the foot of the Cross. Her Assumption gives us hope that those who faithfully follow Christ are called to share in His eternal glory.
On Independence Day, as we remember the sacrifices of those who won our freedom, we are reminded that true freedom is not just political, it is also freedom to live lives of truth, compassion, justice and service. Mary’s example inspires us to become peacemakers, to care for those in need, and to build communities rooted in love and respect.
For us Goans, this day carries yet another beautiful tradition. ‘Konsachem Fest’ is a joyful expression of thanksgiving for God’s abundant blessings. Families bring the first ears of the new paddy harvest (konsa) to the church to be blessed during the Mass. These blessed ears are then distributed to the parishioners to be placed in homes as a sign of gratitude and trust in God’s providence.
No Goan celebration is complete without sharing food, and the Feast of the Assumption is no exception. Families gather around the table to enjoy traditional delicacies prepared from the season’s fresh produce. ‘Patoleos’, steamed in fragrant turmeric leaves, are among the most loved festive treats. Each home has its own special tradition, mainly symbolising the joy of the first harvest and the blessings of community and hospitality.
This unique convergence of the Assumption, Independence Day, and Konsachem Fest reminds us that every blessing deserves a grateful heart. We thank God for the gift of our Blessed Mother, for the freedom we enjoy as citizens of India, and for the bounty of the earth that nourishes our families.
As we celebrate this special day, may Mary, Patroness of India, continue to intercede for our nation. May she guide our leaders with wisdom, strengthen our families in faith, and help us keep our environment safe to continue nourishing us.
