Remembered as the patron saint of youth, purity, and forgiveness, her legacy centers on her profound courage and miraculous willingness to forgive her attacker before her death.

Birth, early life Endurance and Responsibilities
Maria Goretti was born in Corinaldo (Italy) to a poor farming family. Enduring severe poverty, her family relocated to the marshy Roman countryside to work as sharecroppers. The hardships worsened when her father, Luigi, died of malaria. Maria Goretti was just nine years old.

Her mother began working long hours in the fields to take care of the family needs. Goretti helped her mother by caring for her younger siblings, and doing daily chores. She had no formal education or the ability to read or write, so spent most of her time in prayer.

Tragedy strikes again
The family’s poverty forced them to share a farmhouse with another family, the Serenellis, which included a teenager named Alessandro. On a hot July afternoon in 1902, 11-year-old Maria was sitting at the top of the stairs mending a shirt when 18-year-old Alessandro violently grabbed her and dragged her into a bedroom. He demanded that she submit to him, threatening her with a dagger and awl.

Despite the terror, Maria fiercely resisted, repeatedly crying out: “No,

God does not wish it. It is a sin. You would go to hell for it!” Because of her steadfast refusal, an enraged Alessandro stabbed her fourteen times with the awl before fleeing the scene.

Death and Forgiveness
Maria was rushed to the local hospital where she underwent emergency surgery without anaesthesia. Though doctors tried to save her, the severity of her injuries caused fatal infections, and she passed away the following day.

Before her death, she demonstrated unimaginable mercy, stating: “For the love of Jesus, I forgive him, and I want him to be with me in paradise.

Alessandro Serenelli was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Eight years into his sentence, he experienced a profound conversion after having a dream in which Maria Goretti appeared in a garden and forgave him. After his release from prison three years early, he went to Maria’s mother, Assunta, to beg for her forgiveness, which she readily granted. He subsequently spent the rest of his life living as a lay brother in a Capuchin monastery, dedicating himself to the church and a life of penance.

Canonization and Veneration
On June 24, 1950, Maria Goretti was canonized by Pope Pius XII. The ceremony made history; it was the first time in the Catholic Church’s history that a mother was present to witness the canonization of her child.

The major relics of St. Maria Goretti are located in the crypt of the Basilica of Our Lady of Graces and St. Maria Goretti (Santuario Nostra Signora delle Grazie) in Nettuno, Italy, south of Rome. Her skeletal remains are encased within a wax statue and displayed inside a glass coffin. These relics are venerated by the lay faithful and she is remembered for her display of courage, mercy and forgiveness.

Gladys Da Silva SCC 3

Saint Maria Goretti (1890-1902) was an Italian peasant girl who became one of the youngest and most widely venerated saints in the Catholic Church.
