It is rightly said that grandparents are the cornerstones of a family and through them we experience unconditional love and loads of wisdom. In effect they anchor us to our roots as they bridge the gap between the past and the present and also shower the younger generations with warmth, patience and invaluable life lessons. As a fitting tribute, we celebrate Grandparents Day every year by felicitating them and having nice celebrations.This year too was no different and grandparents day was celebrated on 26th July, Feast day of St.Joaquim & St. Anna, grandparents of Jesus. The usual fun, music, felicitations and presentation of gifts and mementos was the order of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
But in the midst of all this excitement we also had the sickening news of learning about the assault and abuse of an 80 year old man by his own son and daughter in law.After viewing the video of the incident,most people felt that even animals would not treat their elders like this.Comparing them with animals would also not be fair because I remember once,reading what an ape had to say\u2026\u201dHow dare you humans say that you\u2019ll have come from us. We do not do the horrible things you\u2019ll do to your loved ones-be it young or old\u201d\u2026so very true because the manner in which the old man was being assaulted is horrible to watch,definitely they must be insane.Just as this incident sparked widespread condemnation and concern,came the news of two attacks on elderly women,shaking the conscience of our Society.The horrifying news of sexual assault of a 70 year old woman and the rape of an 85 year old woman was most unimaginable and disgusting to say the least.It appears that the respect and concern towards the elderly,who also happen to be somebody\u2019s grandparents,is getting eroded by the minute.Their sacrifices and hardships are conveniently getting ignored even by their own family members.It appears that we have lost our mind and ability to understand and share the feelings of others which fosters deep and compassionate relationships.These incidents have literally shattered the sense of security,elderly people expect in their own homes and highlight the fact that advancing age leaves many of our senior citizens,vulnerable to abuse not only by strangers but by their very own family members.This is a real tragedy and needs a serious retrospection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Let us hope and pray that we all admit our shortcomings and failures and ensure stronger protection mechanisms,greater community vigilance and above all prompt actions against the crimes targeting the elderly members of our families and the senior citizens in general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
