St. Mary Magdalene

St. Mary Magdalene is one of the most inspiring women in the New Testament, Her life reflects God’s mercy, the power of transformation and the importance of faithful discipleship. She is best known as the first witness of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and is honored by the Church as the “Apostle to the Apostles. “Mary Magdalene came from the town of Magdala near the Sea of Galilee. The Gospel of Luke tells us that Jesus healed her from seven demons: “Mary called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had come out” (Luke 8:2). After receiving this great blessing, she became a devoted follower of Jesus and supported His ministry along with other women disciples.

Throughout Jesus’ public ministry, Mary remained faithful to Him. Her loyalty was especially evident during His suffering and death. While many disciples. fled in fear, Mary stayed near the cross. The Gospel of John records, “Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother… and Mary Magdalene” (John 19:25). Her presence at Calvary showed her deep love and commitment to Christ. Mary Magdalene also witnessed Jesus’ burial and knew where His body had been placed. On the first Easter morning, she went to the tomb and found it empty. As she stood outside weeping, the risen Jesus appeared to her. When He called her by name, she recognized Him immediately and exclaimed, “Rabboni!” meaning “Teacher” (John 20:16).

Jesus entrusted Mary with an important mission. He told her to go and share the news of His Resurrection with the disciples. She faithfully obeyed and announced, “I have seen the Lord!” (John 20:18). Because she was the first person to proclaim the Resurrection, she is known as the “Apostle to the Apostles.”The life of St. Mary Magdalene teaches us many valuable lessons. Her story reminds us that God’s mercy can transform lives and that true discipleship requires faithfulness even during difficult times. Her courage and devotion encourage us to remain close to Christ and to trust Him in every situation.

Today, St. Mary Magdalene continues to be a source of inspiration for Christians around the world. Her journey from healing to discipleship and from sorrow to joy demonstrates the power of God’s love. As we reflect on her life, may we follow her example of faith and proclaim with confidence the Good News of the risen Christ. St. Mary Magdalene’s feast day is celebrated on July 22. Her witness to the Resurrection remains a powerful reminder that those who seek Christ with a sincere heart will find hope, joy, and new life in Him.
