As the Messiah, Jesus was called the ‘Son of David.’ During His trial and crucifixion, He was identified as the ‘King of the Jews.’ Jesus is the perfect King because He is God, and He came to live among the people. As king, He brought God into the midst of creation, to show people what God really had in mind with His kingdom.
Christ the King is one of the most important titles of Jesus. Even though, Jesus Christ was not a king in the earthly sense, He is the Divine King of the Universe, who unites all of the creation with the Father. As St. Paul tells us,1 Cor.15:25-28 for [Christ] must reign until He has put all His enemies, under His feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. When all things are subjected to Him, then the Son Himself will also be subjected to Him who put all things under Him that God may be all in all.
Feast of Christ the King, also called Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, a festival celebrated in the Roman Catholic Church in Honour of Jesus Christ, as Lord over all creation. This feast emphasizes the true kingship of Christ.
Essentially, a magnification of the feast of Ascension, it was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925 as a reminder, that Christ reigns above all earthly rulers. While temporal powers will fade away, Christ’s reign and His kingdom remain eternal.
Originally, it was celebrated on the last Sunday in October, but in the revised liturgical calendar promulgated by Pope Paul VI in 1969 it was moved to the last Sunday of Ordinary Time (immediately preceding Advent), where its theme of Christ’s dominion, made it a fitting end to the liturgical year. The earliest date on which the Feast of Christ the King can occur is 20th November and the latest is 26th November. The festival is also observed in Lutheran, Anglican, and other Protestant churches.
We have a King, and His name is Jesus. A king who is not seeking power and glory, who is not seeking war or conquest, but one who walks humbly and who seeks to serve others. Jesus is the true king who wants you to accept His kingship in your life. Jesus is the king of your heart because He reigns there as well! If you love Him with all your heart, you submit yourself to Him as your ruler and Lord and respond in love (1John 4:19). You will obey His commands because you love Him more than anything else (John 14:15).
The Feast of Christ the King (Feast of the Reign of Christ) “The church gives thanks and praise for sovereignty of Christ, who is Lord of all creation and is coming again in glory to reign (Revelation 1:4-8).”
