(A Celebration of Tradition and Heritage)
Every year, the Catechetical Unit organizes a competition for parents soon after 15th August, focusing on the presentation of traditional sweet dishes. This initiative has helped keep the taste and memories of Goan sweets alive across generations.
This year, however, the Unit introduced something new – “Purvozanchem Daiz” (Heritage of Our Ancestors). Instead of limiting the celebration to parents and sweet dishes, the day was expanded to involve children, youth, and parish groups in showcasing Goan traditions through cultural activities, songs, dances, and games.
The entire celebration was held outdoors in the parish compound, under the guidance of our Parish Priest and Animator. The program began with God’s blessings, followed by a delightful action dance of the little ones.
Patriotic dances, a Freedom Fighter and Goan Occupation fashion show, and poem recitations on Independence Day themes reflected the spirit of the occasion. Our PPC members and Legion of Mary members displayed graceful folk dances, while the youth band entertained with lively beats.
The Confirmation students captivated the audience with a thoughtprovoking street play, and the catechists added a lively touch with a Konkani medley dance, which was received with great enthusiasm.
The celebration continued with traditional games such as hit the pot, cock fight, logorio with a twist, langdi race, sack race, tug of war, and treasure hunt, filling the compound with laughter and excitement. The highlight remained the parents’ presentation of traditional sweet dishes, for which tokens of appreciation were distributed.
“Purvozanchem Daiz” proved to be a memorable and successful event, thanks to the united efforts of many hands and the enthusiastic participation of children, parents, and parishioners.
The Catechetical Unit extends heartfelt gratitude to our Parish Priest, Animator, volunteers, parents, and participants whose constant support and dedication made this event a grand success. May this celebration continue to grow year after year, inspiring more people to take part and ensuring that our traditions remain alive, cherished, and passed on with pride to the generations to come.
