Pediatric Physiotherapy

What is pedaitric physiotherapy?

Physiotherapists restore people to near normal (normal) function through training or therapy. There are various specialities within the field of physiotherapy, one of them being Pediatric Physiotherapy. Pediatric physiotherapy concerns the therapeutic management and care of babies, children and young adults from birth until 19 years. These therapists offer expertise on child development, treatment of childhood conditions and disability. We train the young ones to achieve their optimal level of function and maximize independence.

What do pediatric physiotherapists do and what conditions do they treat?

Typically, a therapist would gain a thorough understanding of a child’s developmental history which would then be followed by a detailed assessment. Assessment is in the form of examining their complaints, joint movements, muscle strength, postures, neurological problems, chest examination and general development. Based on the findings, an individualized treatment plan is drawn up.

Some of the conditions treated by pediatric physiotherapists:

  • Orthopedic- deformities or pain in feet, legs, knees, hip and spine; general faulty postures; pediatric arthritic diseases; deviations in walking and advice on supportive equipment; muscle weakness; sports related injuries
  • Neurological- intellectual disability and physical impairment; brain injury; developmental delay; upper/lower limb paralysis; progressive muscle diseases; syndromes (e.g. Down syndrome); pelvic re-education in children
  • Cardiorespiratory- exercises and training for children with birth heart defects, obesity and diabetes; training for children undergoing chemotherapy; chest problems
  • Early intervention or development stimulation for premature babies; intervention for babies in the ICU

You can either be referred by a doctor or visit a therapist directly
