Pentecost

The gift of the Holy Spirit completes the saving mysteries we have been celebrating during this Easter season. Jesus died for our sins, rose from the dead to give us life and ascended into heaven taking with Him our humble flesh and blood. Having brought the life of man into the life of God by Ascension, Jesus now brings God’s life to man by sending us the Spirit. Through the Paschal mysteries our Heavenly Father takes us into His own life, divinizes and makes Himself our inheritance and cherished portion. The Infinite love of the Father and Son is now living in us, purifying us, making every fiber of our being Christ-like. He unites us with Christ and with one another. He is the pledge of our eternal life, the source of our faith, hope and love, the strength of our life. The first result of the coming of the spirit is that the Apostles begin speaking as the Spirit dictates. The Spirit is now the inner power in the disciples proclaiming the person of the dead and risen Lord to all. He is the consoling presence in their persecutions, the principal agent in every event in the Church. One faith, one hope, one love living in the hearts of many and different peoples from all over the earth joins us together into the one body of Christ.
Pentecost means that the love of the Father and Son has descended into our hearts and into this world. In Christ we know that God truly loves us, that humanity has become part of the inner life of God Himself. In seating Jesus at His right hand, the Father gives us His Spirit, The incarnate-Word’s abiding presence in our midst continues through the presence of the spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of power, God’s Spirit transforming us
sinful men. He is the source of Christian love, hope and faith, freeing us from our bondage to law (Gal 5:8)
The Holy Spirit is a creative Spirit. It is the Spirit that has created this beautiful world out of the primeval chaos. It is the Spirit that creates living men out of dry bones in the valley of death in the vision of Ezekiel (Ch. 37). It is the Spirit that creates prophets out of weak men in the Old Testament. It is the Spirit that creates prophets out of weak men in the Old Testament. It is the spirit that shapes the human Christ in the womb of the Virgin. It is the Spirit that urges Christ to undertake his salvific public ministry. It is the spirit that transforms the weak Apostle into powerful witnesses of Christ’s resurrection. The Holy Spirit is a humanizing Spirit. It is the Spirit that makes ordinary man into children of God and sons in the Son. It is the Spirit that calls all men into a community of friends and brothers, breaking down every wall that separates man from man – linguistic, racial, national and economic. It is the spirit that liberates man from every dehumanizing element, freeing him from dead legalism, liberating him from every slavery of sin, fear and death.
The gifts of the Spirit are poured on the Church so that God’s glory and power may be clearly manifest to all. Let us begin to live with the newness and purity of heart that belong to the people of God. May the Spirit invade our hearts and minds and make us the living temples of His presence in this land.
