The vibrant spirit of Konkani music came alive on 25th January, 2025 at the St. Sebastian Church compound Aquem , as the much-anticipated Kantaram Lharam 2025 Konkani solo and duet singing competition captivated the audience.
Organized by the St. Sebastian Parish, the event celebrated the rich musical heritage of Goa while providing a platform for talented Parishioners from all over Goa to shine. The primary aim of the competition is to promote and preserve the rich cultural heritage of Konkani music amongst Parishioners of Parishes in Goa. The Objectives to be served are Cultural Promotion, Community engagement and Recognition of Excellence.
“Kantaram Lharam” in its 3rd edition was centered on the Jubilee 2025 theme “Pilgrims of Hope.” As His Holiness Pope Francis so beautifully expressed it: “We must fan the flame of hope that has been given to us, and help everyone to gain new strength and certainty by looking to the future with an open spirit, a trusting heart and far-sighted vision”. It reflects the universal human experience of seeking renewal, celebrating achievements, and embracing the hope of a brighter future. In a series of planned Jubilee celebrations, the singing competition, was the first event that served as a melodic tribute to the theme.
The event commenced with the unveiling of Jubilee Banner by Fr. Agnelo Rodrigues followed by the Jubilee Hymn presented by the St. Sebastian Parish Choir with Fr. Josely Rocha directing the same. In line with the Jubilee celebration 4 Employees of the Church viz. Francis Duarte, Agostinha Dias, Mary Baptista and Inacio Fernandes were Felicitated for their long standing services to the Church.
In the solo category, Ms. Rishona Gomes (Jesus, Mary and Joseph Parish, Nuvem) clinched the first prize with a soul-stirring rendition while the duet category saw Alroy Fernandes & Ester Pires (Holy Spirit Parish, Margao Our Lady of Rosary Parish Navelim) take home top honors with their harmonious performance. In the solo category the second & Third place was bagged by Pierson Barreto (Regina Martyrum Parish , Assolna) & Pleven Vaz (St. John of the Cross Parish, Sanquelim) respectively, whereas in the duet category the second place was bagged by Ashell Gomes & Reuben Fernandes ( Our Lady of Rosary Parish, Navelim). The winners received trophies, certificates and pool Cash prize of Rs. 55,000. A panel of esteemed judges viz. Fr. Jean Ruby da Cruz Fernandes, Mr. Seby Fernandes and Ms. Lulu Fortes evaluated the performances on parameters such as vocal quality, stage presence etc.
Vote of thanks was proposed by Project Manager Mr. Desmond Gomes acknowledging the efforts of Parish Priests Fr. Agnelo Rodrigues, Fr. Josely Rocha, organizing committee, sponsors, and participants who contributed to the event’s success. The joyous atmosphere, filled with music and camaraderie, left attendees eagerly anticipating next year’s edition.
