“Migrant” – A Mind Set

Migration is not an uncommon Biblical theme. Migration is so central in the Bible because it is central to human experience. In fact I would say that we humans are a migratory species.

In the old Testament we have Abraham and Sarah who are commanded to migrate from the land of UR to the land of Canaan (Gen 12 : 1 – 2). Whether following the “pull” of a promised future or the “push” of conflict economic distress or famine, Abraham and Sarah’s descendants also lived lives shaped by migration. Joseph the grandson of Isaac was sold by his brothers along the trade line that went to Egypt only to be rejoined by his father Jacob and his brothers later because of famine. The Israelites had their own migration experience for over forty years and God wanted them to recall this always, “You shall treat the alien who resides with you no differently than the natives born among you and you shall love him as yourself.” (Leviticus 19 : 34). ASH WEDNESDAYASH WEDNESDAY

Ash Wednesday is a solemn reminder of human mortality and the need for reconciliation with God and marks the beginning of the penitential Lenten season. It is commonly observed with ashes and fasting. But how did this tradition come about ?

There is no mention of Ash Wednesday in the Bible. But there is a custom of donning ashes as a sign of penitence that predates Jesus. In the Old Testament, Job repents “in dust and ashes” and there are other associations of ashes and repentance in Esther, Samuel, Isaiah and Jeremiah. By the 10th century, the monk, Aelfric started the practice, which dates to the eighth century, to the period before Easter, writing, “Now let us do this little at the beginning of our Lent that we strew ashes upon our heads to signify that we ought to repent our sins during the Lenten fast.” By the 11th century, the practice was widespread throughout the Church — until Martin Luther, the Protestant reformer, threw the practice out in the 16th century because it was not Biblically based. There’s no Lent in the Bible, either, though many Christians see it as an imitation of the 40 days Jesus spent fasting and battling with Satan in the desert.

Editorial – Feb 2022

The year 2022 is already a month old. Enthusiastically and with a lot of hope we all moved into the New Year with a sense of feeling that the worst was behind us. It appeared that the days of lock down and restrictive movement of people caused by the pandemic during the past two years or so would soon be a thing of the past and confined to history books. The pall of gloom appeared to have blown away, when all of a sudden, the emergence of the Omicron variant of the Corona virus dealt a bodily blow and brought us back to square one. Apparently this variant spreads at a faster pace and only God knows how long we all will have to live under restrictions and fear. We need to be alert and take all necessary precautions and follow the SOPs and guidelines issued by the Government and Health Authorities.

Our Lady of Lourdes – Heal Us

On 11th February we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. The mention of Lourdes takes me back to more than 40 years when I was blessed with the opportunity to visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in France. This blessing came again to me in 2007.

The roads leading to the Shrine – the Grotto – are lined on both sides with stalls selling the tourists’ delight – all kinds of religious items, statues, medals, rosaries, holy pictures, post- cards, empty plastic bottles in all kinds of shapes and sizes to carry back the Holy Waters. It all seemed for me, exciting and interesting, but also the cause of much delay in reaching the Grotto in time for the services. Read more

Holy Childhood

The Missionary day for children or Holy Childhood day in some parts of the world is celebrated during the Christmas season and on Epiphany Sunday.

There are a lot of lessons drawn from the day of Epiphany of the Lord. The child Jesus, though a baby shows himself to the whole world as light and source of salvation. Our children though young, are also agents of evangelization and have to be respected, accorded the dignity they deserve, be allowed to serve the Church and be witnesses of the Gospel to the ends of the world.

REFLECT …. PRAY …. AND VOTE

Introduction:
Elections are a two-way responsibility, both of the electorate as well as of the candidates. We should elect the right people, rather than electing the wrong people and blaming them. In our first few assemblies, we elected respectable persons who enjoyed high credibility. Nowadays, we want to elect people who are at our back and call, to serve our purposes, even if they are illegal.
