An Altar Server’s Prayer

Open my mouth, O Lord, to bless your Holy Name.
Cleanse my heart from all evil and distracting thoughts.
Enlighten my understanding and inflame my will that I may serve more worthily at your holy altar.
O Mary, Mother of Christ the High Priest, obtain for me the most important grace of knowing my vocation in life.
Grant me a true spirit of faith and humble obedience so that I may ever behold the priest as a representative of God and willingly follow him in the Way, the Truth, and the Life of Christ.
Amen.

Altar Servers Day

(6th November, 2022)

Altar servers assist the clergy in celebrating the Sacred Liturgy, especially the sacrifice of the Holy Mass. The various tasks of altar servers include leading liturgical processions, assisting with the Missal and the book of prayers, helping set the altar and attending to sacred vessels after communion. Altar servers also help with the candles, incense, and processional cross.

In addition to liturgical service, altar serving is also a wonderful way for our children to advance in spiritual life that is centered on the Eucharist and to grow in vocational awareness. Servers participate in the Sacred Liturgy with their own work that contributes to the Work of the Faithful and the prayer of the Church and thus their service helps build up the Body of Christ. In this way, altar serving is a serious ministry that requires commitment, reliability, and a certain amount of dedicated time, so that it is carried out worthily. Read more

Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, known in the East as “the entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple, is a liturgical feast celebrated on November 21 by the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and some Anglo-Catholic churches. The council of Epheusus in AD 431 decreed that Mary is the Theotokos because Her Son Jesus is both God and man: One divine person from two natures (divine and human) intimately united.

The story relates that in thanksgiving for the birth of their daughter Mary, Joachim and Anne decided to consecrate her to God, and bring her, at the age of 3 years, to the temple in Jerusalem. Mary remained in the Temple until her twelfth year at which point Joseph was assigned to be her guardian. According to Coptic tradition, her father Joachim died when Mary was six years old and her mother when Mary was eight. It is from that arose the feast of Mary’s Presentation. Read more

Thoughts for November

We enter the month of November, thinking that in two months we will see the close of 2022, which is true. However according to the Liturgical Calendar (the church calendar), November is actually the last month of the year. The 4th Sunday of November is the 1st Sunday of Advent and the start of the New Liturgical year.

The Liturgical year begins with the Birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ, followed by the Epiphany, 8 weeks of the Ordinary Times, Lent, Passion of Our Lord, Resurrection, Ascension and Pentecost (the birthday of the church). Another 24 weeks of Ordinary Times follow, ending with the kingship of Jesus on the 3rd Sunday of November. The calendar is designed to begin and end with Jesus Christ. The Church takes us through the events in the life of Jesus Christ in the very order Jesus had predicted to the Apostles and came to pass. Read more

Gandhi Jayanti

Who was Mahatma Gandhi
Born on 2nd October 1869, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was India’s tallest leader of the independence movement. He successfully led India’s non-violent movement against the British, which in turn inspired many civil rights movements across the world.

Gandhi had studied law and he went to South Africa to represent a client. Upon return, he joined the Indian National Congress and led nationwide campaigns for farmers, peasants, and labourers. He also fought against caste discrimination and fought for expanding women’s rights.

He led some of the most historic movements in India’s freedom struggle. He led Indians to break the salt law, through the Dandi March in 1930, which helped Indians believe that they can challenge the might of the British. He also led the Quit India movement in 1942. Read more

Mass Media Influence across ages

Mahatma Gandhi once said – “A man is a product of his thoughts, what he thinks, he becomes.”
Today there is a lot of mass media awareness, which can be harnessed to bring about good change in the world; at the same time it could also be misused.

As can be seen from the graph given here, the mass media source with maximum and growing influence is Social Media. Direct sources are a close second, however the percentage influence in old and young alike is gradually reducing. The percentage of men and women in the age group of 15-49 yrs. who, at least once a week, read newspaper/magazine, listen to radio and watch TV is 31.8% (men) and 24.4% (women). As per National Family Health Survey 2019-2021, the current trend shows that the habit of reading newspapers and magazines, has drastically decreased. Read more

Exercising your way through mental health

Over the past two decades the global burden of disease has shifted from communicable to non-communicable diseases such as cancers, heart diseases, orthopaedic problems and diabetes, especially among older adults. People with these conditions are often prone to experiencing depression, stress and anxiety.  Mental health conditions can occur at any point in life and require long-term support. Intervention is usually in the form of medication that is prescribed for a prolonged period of time and known to have side effects.  Moreover, in our society, we stigmatize the concept of mental health and avoid talking about it openly, but do we consider taking other measures that also have remedial effects on mental health? People prefer quick results or aren’t aware of other alternatives most of the times. Although medications give instant relief, which is necessary in times of extreme distress, we ought to consider other alternatives which are gaining interest in the past few years. Physical activity is receiving much research attention in this domain.  Read more
